Johannesburg - A man burnt to death after his RDP house caught fire on Monday in Tsakane in Langaville, the Ekurhuleni municipality said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the two-roomed house burned to the ground and the body of the 54-year-old man lying outside, the municipality said in a statement.
The man had suffered burns over his entire body.

A neighbour noticed smoke billowing out of the house's windows and doors and attempted to rescue the man inside.

He successfully pulled the man out of the burning house but he was already dead.

The neighbour also suffered smoke inhalation for his efforts and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. Police have opened an inquest docket.

      Indeed. Very poorly phrased!!

"Valiant life-saving attempt by neighbour in vain" would have been a little better!

Agreed. Very poor attempt to create tabloid type sensationalism. Not to mention insensitivity to the departed and a lack of respect to the neighbor. Down right stupid.

Unfortunately your bravery was to no avail, but well done.

I'm not so sure about the headline - it sounds as though the neighbour didn't bother to TRY and resucue his neighbour. In addition, was the man's 'failed attempt' the story or the fact that a man died (and a 'hero' who tried to help ended up in hospital)?

Good on him for trying! Pity that it was too late. The chap had probably died from smoke inhalation by then.

RIP. Well done sir for your valiant effort.

Not the best title for an article.

This is a very poor headline. This man risked his life.

He will later learn that good deeds never go unpunished when he receives his medical bill and no compensation for his attempt. Anyone ready to start a fund for this guy?

Hope for the guys speedy recovery sorry he tried in vain but your efforts will always be a man amoung men.
