Man falls from building while smoking

2012-03-02 15:06

Durban - A man fell from the second storey of a Durban block of flats after losing his footing during a smoke break on Friday, paramedics said.

“He is in a stable condition at the moment and is very lucky,” ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks told News24.

The man in his early thirties usually took smoke breaks every half an hour at his home in Overport in Durban. His father heard the fall and called paramedics.

He was found with a broken leg. Neck and back injuries were suspected due to the height of the fall, and he was taken to the hospital for further medical care.

@makatika - You'd think so, but these people obviously like to dice with death (every half an hour...).

      Makatikamusona - 2012-03-02 15:24

I do smoke too but not that heavy maybe 1-3 loose draw, and I think now I have a reason to quit. I would also be interested to know what he was smoking, if that helps I would avoid that brand I wonder if he had fell while eating KFC/Nandos would the title include those names.

      PhilipV - 2012-03-02 15:49

I quit smoking 2months ago ... but never smoked that heavy.

      Simnikiwe - 2012-03-02 15:54

He was definetly high...two storeys high

      Sharon - 2012-03-02 18:24

They don't put the warnings on the packs for nothing - Smoking really is bad for you!

      Seja - 2012-03-03 04:29

Durban Poison!! ...I know that stuff very well.

      Boer - 2012-03-03 08:17

One way or another, smoking does kill.

  • Makatikamusona - 2012-03-02 15:17

Damn Smoking can kill you in different ways. He really liked his smoke(every half hour) He must then quit while he has been given a second chance

      Grimett - 2012-03-02 15:43

      smoking breaks

      Grimett - 2012-03-02 15:53

      ok then, coffee breaks

      Makatikamusona - 2012-03-02 15:55

@Grimett Noted, I bet he drinks coffee during those smoke breaks

      Makatikamusona - 2012-03-02 15:57

Ok @Grimett maybe that is High Level(HG) can you at least come down to my level. What is your main point then because I thought you meant to say that taking half-hour smoke doesn't necessarily mean he smoke every half-hour

      Freddie - 2012-03-02 16:44

Surgeon Generals Warning... Smoking is Hazardous to your health.

  • Olivia - 2012-03-02 15:19

    Hopefully he'll stop smoking now.

  • Duane - 2012-03-02 15:23

Looking at the clip picture for this story on the headlines page - looks like he was smoking a "slow boat" and every half an hour nogal, gees no wonder he bliksemmed off the balcony, he must have been so stoned.

      Boer - 2012-03-03 08:19

He was on a trip ...... Back to earth. Perhaps he didn't fall, the ground came up and slap him.

  • Forsythe - 2012-03-02 15:24

they should put that on cigarette boxes, " dont smoke if u r pregnant, breast-feeding or standing on top of a building".

      Marion - 2012-03-02 15:33

... don't smoke when breastfeeding, you may burn your mother...

      Makatikamusona - 2012-03-02 15:41

Good Point. And if you have to call a spade a spade you would then say "If you are a woman don't smoke". I am saying this because your warnings applies more to women Is it me or women are taking on a bad habit of smoking and they are overdoing it maybe just appease men

  • Frank - 2012-03-02 15:27

    Smoking is dangerous

      Henri - 2012-03-02 15:32

  • Yolanda - 2012-03-02 15:28

lmao!!!! Don't smoke and stand on the balcony

  • Hugh - 2012-03-02 15:32

I never heed those health warnings on the boxes cause most dont apply, I cant fall pregnant, I dont breast feed, I only inhale first degree smoke, so maybe adding "You can fall off a building" would be a worthy addition

      Morama - 2012-03-02 16:10

      Thefat - 2012-03-02 17:04

I think the new warning should read, "Warning, smoking can't make you fly"

      Ben - 2012-03-02 17:12

Yes I agree. My doctor has also been reading those and he cannot understand how I can still be healthy and working full-time after 52 years' smoking.

  • Shirley - 2012-03-02 15:32

If this was America there would be a lawsuit-however in S.A. he doesnt have a leg to stand on. Hope he makes a full recover-no after action satisfaction with that smoke!

      Forsythe - 2012-03-02 15:35

he doesnt have a leg to stand on is probably correct cause they both broken.

      Shirley - 2012-03-02 16:32

  • Annelise - 2012-03-02 15:33

  • Marion - 2012-03-02 15:34

  • Morama - 2012-03-02 16:04

Is really this News worthy? I believe News24 is going down!!!

      FinalJustice - 2012-03-02 18:51

Somehow I do feel sorry for journalists in SA: They're also being 'marginalized' by our crooked society - Crimes like murder, rape and armed robbery just don't make news anymore - now they have to dish up crappy stories like this to try and earn a living.

      werner.smidt - 2012-03-03 09:38

We need more news like this . . tragic, yet somewhat humorous. They could put it under Sci-Tech and throw in a lesson on Newton's laws.

  • Gregory Jurgens - 2012-03-02 16:10

Hope he managed to finish his smoke before fell, ciggerettes are expensive now days.

  • AllanLouiseOelschig - 2012-03-02 17:24

  • Dushan - 2012-03-02 17:49

He should have just smoked in the house in front of his father and he would still be OK...Indians don't smoke in front of their parents...just not worth the effort I say

  • Lumko Ntshinka - 2012-03-02 18:25

Lol he must take this as a sign from heaven to stop puffing it up

  • Se-a Spencer Ikeremm - 2012-03-02 19:24

Every 30mins?! How can he smoke that much? Or is he awake maybe just 2hrs a day? A person awake just 10hrs would finish a pack...

  • Franklin - 2012-03-02 20:38

Watch out--you smoke and gravity calls you!!

  • jeremy.acton - 2012-03-03 00:22

A smoke every thirty minutes was not ganja, friends, That's the bitch called nicotine.

  • cdwilson3 - 2012-03-03 09:21

it just goes to prove that the government warnings are correct......Smoking is hazardous to your health......rofl

  • Fred - 2012-03-03 09:31

If you see Malema standing somewhere on a balcony, offer him a smoke...

  • Hugh - 2012-03-03 11:33

The question is whether the family are the cause of his fall since they refused to have him smoke in the house. They would rather him put himself in futher danger. I note too when compared to those who commented on the Cocaine addict comments made here prove my assertion that some are more sympathetic to drug addicts that smokers

  • ZION - 2012-03-03 11:42

Wonder if he took a puff during the long drop and sang: Mama Mia, here I come again. Mama Mia.

  • Shane - 2012-03-03 12:53

Well, it has always been said, "smoking will be the death of you."
