Durban - A Durban man died in a freak accident on Saturday night when a bakkie knocked him, causing him to fall over a bridge while exchanging details after a car crash.

Garrith Jamieson from Rescue Care said the man had been in an accident on the M4 towards Durban near Quality Street.

He was exchanging details with the police and breakdown services when a bakkie came bearing down on them.

The bakkie driver knocked the police officers and emergency personnel as well as the 30-year-old man who had survived the earlier accident.

The man lost his balance and fell over the bridge's railing on to Lansdown road.

He was declared dead, and two policemen were injured.

The bakkie driver was arrested and taken to be tested for alcohol consumption levels and the policemen were taken to hospital to be treated for their injuries.
