Cape Town - A man has been found guilty in the Vryheid Magistrates Court on charges of animal cruelty, and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment or a fine of R10 000.

Dlokwakhe Johnston Bopela was declared unfit to own or be in charge of any animal. It was also ordered that the 10 dogs currently in his care had to be handed over to the NSPCA.

A warrant to visit his Vryheid property was obtained in 2011, where NSPCA and SPCA personnel confiscated 22 greyhounds that were being kept in overcrowded and dirty conditions.

11 of the 22 dogs had to be euthanased because of severe injuries.

Bopela was convicted on similar charges in 2009.
