Man gets bail after attack on traffic cops

Johannesburg - A farmer accused of beating up three traffic officers in Ventersdorp was released on R3 000 bail on Tuesday, the North West public safety department said.

Karen Petrus Coetzer, 52, would be back in the Ventersdorp Magistrate's Court on 11 September, spokesperson Lesolang Simon Mmope said in a statement.

"He was released on conditions such as to report to the nearest police station on two occasions in a week, and not to intimidate the concerned victims directly or indirectly," he said.

Coetzer allegedly attacked three female officers at a roadblock on the R30 between Ventersdorp and Derby on Monday.

This was after it was established that his vehicle's licence disc had expired in 2007.

He allegedly punched the officers and drove off shortly after was asked to get out of his car to receive his traffic fine slip.

He was caught about 1km away.

He was facing charges of assault to cause grievous bodily harm and failure to furnish information to traffic officers.

Anyway we know he is still going to get away with it,by paying a fine or thrown out of court due to lack of evidence

what is evident and not raised here is the incompetence of 3 , "THREE" police officers, and the inability to restrain and or arrest the individual at the time of alleged assault. I am not privy to the facts but I would defend this case as an attempted bribe of several thousands of R's and the alleged assailant feared for his safety, forced his way past the three officers who were acting in a threatening manner and the alleged assailant was intent on heading to the nearest police station to lay a charge of assault, crimen injuria, soliciting a bribe, corruption and fraud. These officers were afraid of repercussion and claimed assault as defence to pending criminal action. but Im not and the guy could just be a dumb ass ! or there is some truth in my supposition

Agree Kelvyn... 3, presumably armed traffic officers, get donnered by 1 old farmer! Would hate to imagine what would happen if these 3 law enforcers had to come across a real crime situation! If it wasn't for the fact that this has been turned into a race issue by some, it would be quite funny!

      Phumlani Madlala - 2012-08-15 09:51

He s a criminal and i would suggest that those who are directly and indirectly applauding him are criminals too, stop this perception of yours of thinking that all policeman and women are corrupt,if they wanted to solicit bribe why did he assault them,if he was the one who was assaulted i cant imagine the hullabaloo you would be making here,if one of us is wrong we must with one voice show him or her the way

      kelvyn.davidson.1 - 2012-08-17 17:56

@ Phumlani, here in SA as with the rest of the world, you are innocent until proven guilty ! You surmise so much, you immediately believe this person to be guilty, I presume you believe the three police women to be black and the "Farmer" white, you automatically choose based on zero, evidence that he is guilty and they are innocent, you then add , " those who are directly and indirectly applauding him are criminals too " so by definition support of any party, right or wrong makes all affiliated guilty too, if one or two or all witnesses / complainants, have a slight variation of events and or one or more do not present themselves in court at the specified time, would that indicate they are guilty parties or just too lazy to get to court, now i advise choose how to answer as by your own admission, tose who affiliate are equally guilty.
