Kimberley - A man was sentenced to double life imprisonment at the Northern Cape High Court on Tuesday for the kidnapping, rape and murder of a 5-year-old girl.

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Mashadu Malabi said Judge Bulelwa Pakati sentenced Ivan Mathibe, 30, after he pleaded guilty and confirmed that he sexually molested the toddler before killing her.

The court heard that Mathibe, who was a family friend, was drinking beer with the father of the deceased, Florence Dipuo Barend, 5, at their home.

“Mathibe kidnapped Barend from her home while she was playing and then raped and killed her,” said Malabi.

Barend’s naked body was found by members of the community near Witdam Police station in the veld on 30 November 2014 after she was reported missing.

Mathibe pleaded guilty to kidnapping, raping and murdering Barend and confirmed that he knew her.

Mathibe further told the court that he penetrated the child anally and he wanted to take the child home but he realised that he would be in trouble if she told her father.

“He then took a stone and smashed the head of the child,” said Malabi.

A doctor testified that the child had suffered severe anal injuries and a fractured skull.

Advocate Joyleen Mabaso asked the court for life sentences.

Mabasa said that the girl trusted the accused and that’s why she went with him.

“What he did was inhumane and cruel; she still had her whole life ahead of her,” said Mabasa.

Malani said the NPA welcomed and accepted the sentence.
