East London - A man has been sentenced to life in jail for the kidnapping, rape and murder of 14-year-old Dorcas Ncancali from Willowvale, Eastern Cape, police said on Thursday.

Lungephi Ngeshweni, 48, was Ncancali's neighbour in Matanzima location in Dadamba village. He approached her in July last year at her home pretending to need her father's cell phone number, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

Ncancali told Ngeshweni that her father was not home and that she did not know his number.

"She then decided to accompany the accused to where her father was," Manatha said.

"On the way, the accused dragged the deceased to a nearby forest. [She] was raped by the accused. She was then severely assaulted until she died."

Ncancali's body was discovered the following day in the forest after a search by police and residents.

Her younger brother had identified Ngeshweni as the last person that his sister was seen with.

Upon his arrest, it was found that Ngeshweni had been out on parole for a rape he had committed in 2003. He had been sentenced to 20 years for the crime.

On Wednesday, the Willowvale Regional Magistrate's Court sentenced him to four years in jail for the kidnapping, and served him with two life sentences for the rape and murder respectively.
