Mbombela - Mpumalanga police on Wednesday welcomed the "unsympathetic sentence" meted out to a 25-year-old man found guilty of rape and robbery.

Tshepo Mokone was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, 15 years for robbery with a firearm, 18 years for house robbery and 12 years for burglary, SAPS confirmed in a statement.

The sentences will run concurrently.

Mokone and three accomplices forced their way into a woman's home at Timbavati Trust near Acornhoek on July 12 2011 where they held her at gunpoint, demanding cash and cellphones.

Police say the woman was then gang-raped by all four suspects.

Four men were later arrested, but three were released. Mokone, however, remained in custody as police had DNA evidence linking him to the crime.

Mokone was sentenced on Tuesday in the Mhala Regional Court.

Mpumalanga provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Dumisa Magadlela, said the evidence presented by his team who “worked tirelessly to secure a conviction” assisted in the harsh sentence.
