Man headbutted by giraffe

2012-03-06 11:38

Pretoria - A man was in a serious condition on Tuesday morning after he was headbutted by an adult giraffe outside Hammanskraal in Pretoria, paramedics said.

"Apparently the man had been trying to draw blood from the animal when it headbutted and pushed him up against the fence post," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

The incident happened at a wildlife quarantine facility.

Wicks said the man, 32, sustained serious spinal injuries and was airlifted to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria.

  • Lee - 2012-03-06 12:08

I presume it was someone authorised to do this and was obviously taking blood for a reason and hope he recovers well but please, anyone else dealing with animals need to be more carefull as they ar unpredictable and will react to even a pin prick to protect itself.

  • Hoosen Essa - 2012-03-06 13:06

if the blood was for medical testing in the interest of the animal, then its sad. but if this blood was for muti, then the guy had it coming and well done to the giraf

  • Marius - 2012-03-06 13:27

Said the Giraffe, "Hi, my name is Bakkies Botha, if you want blood, you've got it".....

  • Marlon - 2012-03-06 13:58

Please keep this giraffe away from south african national blood services.

  • Bianca - 2012-03-06 14:27

Not good that the guy got hurt but I laughed out loud as I mentally processed this... Can just imagine that long neck bending down and going 'haaaaiya!!'... Giraffe - 1, Human - 0!

  • Thebeeame - 2012-03-06 14:32

Eish man, how could you guys be so cruel. The man was just trying to do his work. Only he had to give some blood in order to get some blood. Talk about nothing for free.

  • Staal - 2012-03-06 14:34

  • Henri James Christie - 2012-03-06 18:08

No serious, hope he makes a speedy recovery. Every job has its perils. I'm working on a syringe with a 4m needle, anybody interested??

  • Stray - 2012-03-06 18:39

I don't think being hit by a knopkierie that big is all that funny. Wishing the victim a full recovery.

  • Lwando Zondwa-Ziintshaba Poni - 2012-03-07 06:55

Oh come on South Africans, its horrible that someone doing an honest job got hurt. But the idea of a girrafe going Zidane on someone is a little amusing. Wish him a speedy recovery... he'll probably laugh too when he fully recovers.

  • Jan - 2012-03-07 12:50

Is the giraffe at least still fine?

  • Jr Strydom - 2014-07-31 18:01

He does not know anything about handling animals-maybe he got his training from this new fashion time schools-strike and burned down schools and now he knows everything.
