East London - A man was arrested for allegedly stealing machinery and tools worth around R150 000 from a construction site in Haven Hills, East London, on Friday morning.

Police spokesperson Stephen Marais said about five to seven men entered the site in Sunnyside Road around 02:00.

They allegedly tied two guards up and stole items from the site.

He said police dogs were dispatched after residents phoned police to tell them "something was not right" at the site.

The dogs followed a spoor and led officers to most of the stolen items.

A witness gave a police patrol a description of one of the suspects.

A 23-year-old man was arrested while fleeing in the direction of Scenery Park.

Marais said the man was due to appear in the East London Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
