Johannesburg - A 11-month-old baby boy who was allegedly beaten to death by his mother's boyfriend in Johannesburg had swelling on his head and was bruised all over his body, police said on Sunday.

"It was very sad to see a baby in that condition," said Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele.

A postmortem would confirm what killed the infant but his mother's boyfriend, a 21-year-old Zimbabwean national, was arrested and charged with murder.

Mbele said the baby's 18-year-old mother was originally from Swaziland.

She claimed to have been outside their shack in the Madondo squatter camp on Thursday doing the laundry, when she heard her boyfriend shout at the baby

"She eventually went in and asked him where the baby is," said Mbele.

"He first said the baby was asleep and then changed his story and said he thought the child had fainted."

The mother suggested that they rush the unresponsive child to a nearby fire station for medical assistance.

Paramedics at the station declared the baby dead.

The man tried to flee but was kept at the station until the police came.

He was arrested and charged with murder.

Mbele said the child's mother was very distraught by the incident.

The man was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.
