Johannesburg - A man has been arrested for allegedly defrauding elderly people of thousands of rands in Jabulani, Soweto, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

"A group of older men and women opened a case against a man they said had promised them double interest on their cash after three months but never paid them," said spokesperson Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

The people had deposited varying amounts of cash into a bank account purported to belong to the 43-year-old man.

"One woman said she deposited R11 000, another R7 000, and the others deposited between R3 000 and R1 000," Makhubela said.

Police set up a trap on Wednesday and called the man to Baragwanath Hospital in Diepkloof where one officer pretended to want information to invest and deposit cash.

The complainants pointed him out and he was arrested and charged with fraud.

Makhubela said further investigations on the bank account were continuing.

The man is expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon.
