Johannesburg - A man was arrested in Midrand on Tuesday after reporting a false hijacking and attempting to bribe police, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said the 32-year-old man was arrested after offering police R4 500 for the docket.

He reported his rented car stolen after being allegedly hijacked by three men wearing police uniforms on Tuesday morning.

Police contacted the rental company, which tracked the vehicle to a complex in Edenvale.

Mogale said the man was arrested after meeting and attempting to bribe police.

He was expected to appear soon in the Wynberg Magistrate's Court.
