Toddler rape, murder accused in court

Five men accused of kidnapping, raping and killing two toddlers from Diepsloot are set to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

Johannesburg - A 40-year-old man has been arrested in Kuruman for raping a 2-year-old girl, Northern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Olebogeng Tawana said the Mozambican man was arrested on Tuesday night after the girl's mother pointed him out.

Tawana said the girl was playing outside her home on Saturday afternoon.

After a while the mother realised that the girl was missing and went to look for her at the man's shack, which was nearby.

"While enquiring from the suspect about the child's whereabouts, she saw her daughter emerging from the bedroom with her underwear pulled down," Tawana said.

"The mother became suspicious and, after consulting with an older woman in the community, a case of rape was opened on Monday."

The man would appear in the Kuruman Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
