Grahamstown - A 34-year-old man appeared in the Port Alfred Magistrate's Court on Thursday for allegedly assaulting an 83-year-old woman with a spade in October, Grahamstown police said on Thursday.

"Heinrich Plaatjies was arrested around 01:00 at a house in Kenton on Sea yesterday [Wednesday]," Captain Mali Govender said.

Plaatjies faced charges of attempted murder and house robbery. The matter was postponed to December 15 for a formal bail application.

He worked for the woman as a painter. On October 19, Plaatjies went to her house in Murray Street, Bathurst and demanded payment for work he had done. When she said she had no cash, he allegedly became aggressive and, using a garden spade, severely assaulted her.

Two children who lived next door, aged 4 and 5, went to ask her for something when they discovered her lying badly beaten and went screaming to their nanny.

She was hospitalised for about a month.

"She is still in a fragile state and living with relatives."

The woman who was attacked is a friend of mine. I thought I would just clarify the story a bit (not that it makes much difference I guess...but anyways here it goes) She had in fact paid the painter in full the previous week (on completion of the job). He came to ask for additional payment because he had done such a good job. The children who found her were not toddlers, but ages 7 and 8 ...and there were 3 of them. :-) She spent a week in hospital and a week in a rehab centre and is now doing really well, living at a retirement village in JHB. :-)
