Johannesburg - A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly stabbing and wounding his mother and sister in Diepkloof, Soweto, Gauteng police said.

The 24-year-old allegedly stabbed his 60-year-old mother and 36-year-old sister at their home on Sunday, said police spokesperson Kay Makhubela.

He then fled the scene but was arrested after people in the area reported his whereabouts to police.

"He was found hiding at one of his neighbour's houses and was arrested," said Makhubela.

His mother and sister were taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital where they remain in a serious condition.

The motive for the stabbing was unknown.

The 24-year-old would appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court soon.
