Johannesburg - A 23-year-old man has appeared in the Brits Magistrate's Court for allegedly raping two women in July and August last year, North West police said.

Spokesperson Captain Paul Ramaloko said on Thursday that the man is accused of raping and robbing his victims of their valuables.

"He is linked to two incidents which took place in Brits Town and Hartbeespoortdam in July and August 2014."

On July 19 last year, the man allegedly raped the 40-year-old woman while she was on her way to work at Afifa in the Hartbeespoortdam area. He allegedly threatened to kill her before dragging here into nearby bushes and raping her.

On August 1, he allegedly raped a 19-year-old woman near a store in Brits.

"The victim was threatened with a handgun and dragged to the bushes. The suspect was with his friend at the time," Ramaloko said.

Both alleged rapes happened during the day.

The suspect, who appeared in court on Wednesday, was arrested earlier on the same day in Kgosi Mampuru Prison, where he was serving time for four counts of murder committed in Olivenhoutbosch and three counts of housebreaking in Wierdeburg in Gauteng.

He was expected back in court later this month.
