Johannesburg - A man who claimed he'd been hijacked while travelling in a rental car appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Monday on 10 counts of fraud, theft of a vehicle and perjury for opening a fake hijacking case, police said.

Perfect Harold Ngonyama, 36, was arrested on Thursday in connection with the theft of a vehicle he had hired from a rental company based at the OR Tambo International Airport, Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo said.

"Instead of returning it when it was due, he told the car rental company that he had been hijacked in Tembisa. He then opened a false hijacking case at the Tembisa SAPS.

"After he opened the case his cellphone suddenly "stopped working" when he was due to meet a representative of the rental company, and that was when the company reported him to the police at the airport," Naidoo said.

During his arrest police found Ngonyama in possession of false identity documents and drivers' licences with different names, and a photograph of him on each of them.

He was also found in possession of credit cards with different names on them.

"All of these documents were found at his place of residence in Pretoria, not far from where the vehicle was found," Naidoo said.

Ngonyama would remain in police custody until his next appearance on July 3.
