Johannesburg - A man alleged to have been involved in the fatal shooting of a policeman appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Zitha S'bukeli Nzama faced charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder.

He was arrested on April 1 for the murder that occurred late last month.

Dressed in a blue jacket, the well-built man sat in the dock and looked straight ahead at the magistrate, making no eye contact with the public gallery.

According to court documents, Nzama lives in Merafe hostel in Soweto.

Following a very brief and short appearance, the matter was postponed to April 14 for the verification of his particulars and for him to secure an attorney.

Constable Ledwaba is one of several police officers who have been murdered in Johannesburg in recent weeks.

He was shot as he attended to an armed robbery at Park Station in the Johannesburg CBD.

He died on the scene and his service pistol was stolen.

It was unclear whether police had since recovered the gun.
