King William's Town - A 19-year-old man alleged to have fatally stabbed a woman and injured her daughter appeared in the Centane Magistrate’s Court where his case was postponed to next month, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

The mother and daughter were attacked at their home in Thembeni on August 15, said Captain Jackson Manatha.

"It was at about 21:00 that the 19 year old girl felt the door of her room being banged and kicked open. She cried very loud and her mother [who was sleeping in another room] came to her rescue," said Manatha.

"The 45-year-old mother was stabbed by the suspect several times on her upper body and she died on the spot," Mantha said.

The woman's daughter was also stabbed in her upper body but she managed to rush to her neighbours who took her to hospital. She survived the attack.

The suspect, Lihle Ncaphayi, who lived in the same area as the victims was arrested several days later.

He faced a charge of murder and attempted murder.

His case returns to court on September 1.
