Man in court over Vaal arms stockpile

2012-10-29 19:23

Johannesburg - A man accused of possession of several high-calibre firearms and more than 70 000 rounds of ammunition appeared in the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate's Court on Monday, Gauteng police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said Jacobus Alwyn Van Zweel's case was postponed until Tuesday and was transferred to the Sebokeng Regional Court.

Van Zweel was arrested on Friday night by police responding to a complaint of domestic violence at his home in Vanderbijlpark.

"It is believed that the suspect attempted to commit suicide following a domestic violence incident," Dlamini said.

He said police took possession of two 9mm pistols and a shotgun, all of which were licensed, plus an AK-47 assault rifle, a R1 rifle, a R5 assault rifle, a 357 Magnum rifle, various AK and R1 magazines, seventeen 9mm pistol magazines and more than 70 000 rounds of ammunition.

Either it's a typo and they mean a .375 rifle, or someone can't tell the difference between a revolver and a rifle - which is very sad...

It is a long straw-like blowgun used to shoot a sleeping doze into MPs during parliamentary sessions.

      emilios.halepopoulos - 2012-10-29 20:51

maybe its those cowboy guns. They used magnum rounds. It was those lever arch rifles.

      kobie.nel1 - 2012-10-29 21:51

No, it is a carbine. I've got one of those. Fire the same round as the .357 revolver. 10 shot magazine under the barrel, with a Winshester stile lever action. The one below the trigger that you swing forward and back to reload. Nice little Cowboy rifle that you can use one handed and fast. Good thing to have around in the bush when a bushpig gets irretated. A bit much for the police licencing department, because they truely believe it must be a handweapon Barrel length about 24 inches 600mm I think. Not going to take it out of the safe to check now. Mine is a Rossi.

      kobie.nel1 - 2012-10-29 21:56

Emilios, see you got the idea. The beauty of the little thing is, as with the .357 revolver, it takes both .357mag rounds and .38sp as long as it is flat nose, because the rounds lie behind each other, and sharp points can act as a firing pin with the recopil. Not good idea. You also got them in .45 cal.

      danny.levin.351 - 2012-10-30 08:01

Deon, that would be a lever action rifle. they are very common in 0.357 magnum

Fear the government that fears your guns.

  • emilios.halepopoulos - 2012-10-29 20:53

70 000 rounds? Sounds like a nice afternoon's target practice session to me... Why is the media so anal about guns? Why are people so anal in general? And why do you people even believe what you read?

  • terrylee.heuer - 2012-10-29 21:04
