Cape Town - A cross-dresser, who appeared in court in high heels and impeccable make-up, was on Tuesday sentenced to 15 years in prison for the murder of an elderly Sea Point man.

Jerome Benjamin, 29, testified in court in mitigation of sentence, reported Die Burger.

“The sentence that I get will never bring back Graham Flax. I have already been punished as I have to relive the murder every day in my head,” said the convicted killer.

He admitted guilt on charges of murder, robbery and attempting to steal a car.

Benjamin and Flax, 64, met on a dating website for gay men.

Benjamin told the court that on 1 March 2013 he had hit Flax twice with a bottle of whisky over the head and then stabbed him several times in the chest and neck with a knife.

He then stole Flax’s cellphone and laptop and sold them to get money for drugs. He told the court he had been addicted to cocaine, tik and khat for the past 14 years.

He also tried to steal Flax’s Corsa bakkie.

A nephew of the deceased, Ronnie Tanur, testified that Flax was an incredible man who would leave a gap in their lives.

“His life was cut short and I don’t think the family will ever recover from his cruel murder.”

Magistrate Wilma van der Merwe said in sentencing that the cruelty of the murder was unacceptable.

“Only animals act like that towards each other.”
