Johannesburg - Mohammed Adams was sentenced to five years imprisonment on Wednesday by the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court for trying to abduct a Florida pupil in 2011, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

"Magistrate Delize Smith considered the effect the offence had on the victim as she dropped out of school after failing to write exams due to emotional trauma," said NPA spokesperson Phindi Louw.

"The defence made an application for leave to appeal, which was denied at the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court."

Prosecutor Lucas Mothibi said the sentence should send a message that it was unlawful to "deprive others of their freedom".

Adams tried to abduct a Grade 10 teen outside Hoërskool Die Burger, west of Johannesburg, on 19 October 2011.

The school is the same one where Louise de Waal, 16, was abducted on 12 October 2011. Her burnt body was found on a farm in Magaliesburg later that day.

Louw said the school security guard gave the police the information about the attempted kidnapping and with his help Adams was arrested.

"Without his [security guard] detailed info, the arrest would not have been possible. We encourage the community to be the eyes and ears of the criminal justice system," she said.
