Pietermaritzburg - A Tugela Ferry man who shot dead a 70-year-old woman was jailed for 14 years by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Monday.

Dolokwakhe Majozi, 29, pleaded guilty to shooting Mbukelakude Ngema twice on a footpath in January.

Prosecutor Kandy Candar said Ngema was hit in the side and head, probably while she was trying to get away from Majozi.

In a guilty plea, Majozi said that on 25 December 2013, Ngema's son attacked his home, firing shots into his wife and children's room.

The son, Sabelo Gabela, was arrested for the attack, but was later released.

Majozi said he believed Ngema was responsible as she had threatened to send her children to kill him.

At a meeting with Ngema and her family, arranged by Induna Gabela, they failed to resolve their problems.

"I asked her why she wanted to kill me and she taunted me, saying no one, not even the police would help me and that was why they released her son.

"Infuriated, I drew a gun I was carrying for protection from her sons and I shot twice at her and fled," Majozi said.
