Johannesburg - A man was killed during a shoot-out with police after a robbery at a house in Cresta on Monday, Johannesburg police said.

Two men in a Mercedes-Benz broke open the gate to the house at about 11:00, Captain Pinky Tsinyane said.

"They threatened a 16-year-old boy with death before robbing him of his cellphone and taking a plasma TV set from the house," she said.

Tsinyane said the police arrived and found the robbers walking out of the house. One of them was carrying the stolen television set.

"The pair shot at the officers, who returned fire and a shoot-out ensued One of the robbers died on the scene, while his accomplice fled on foot," Tsinyane said.
