Durban - A man thought to have been trying to avoid a R7 train fare was electrocuted while on the roof of a passenger coach near the Isithundu station near Pinetown, west of Durban, on Sunday.

He was badly burnt by the force of the power surge when his body came in contact with overhead wires.

Emergency Medical Rescue Services spokesperson Robert McKenzie said paramedics and eThekwini Metro firefighters responded to the area near the train station on Sunday morning.

“The man, estimated to be in his twenties, is believed to have been riding on the train’s roof and that he was electrocuted. The man was declared dead by the attending paramedics. The details of the incident are being investigated by the police,” he added.

Medics and firefighters used ladders to board the roof of the train to get to the body.

While the body was retrieved, the operation of rail services on the passenger line was suspended.

Service resumed when the scene was cleared.
