Johannesburg - A man died after he was hit by a truck in the emergency lane of the R59 in the direction of Meyerton in Johannesburg on Tuesday, paramedics said.

ER 24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the man was a passenger in another truck that stopped after a mechanical failure.

"The driver was standing behind the truck, when he witnessed another larger truck coming past, knocking the passenger over as he was bent over at the side of the trailer," said Jackson.

"The man was dragged several metres and was in a critical condition. Due to extensive injury, his condition deteriorated and did not improve despite all efforts to revive him."

Jackson said the man was declared dead on the scene.
