Johannesburg - A man was killed and four others were injured in a head-on collision on Cloverdene Road in Benoni, paramedics said.

Paramedics found four people were trapped in one car, and one person in another car. Both cars were lying on their sides, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

Two seriously injured women were rescued from the first car.

Hydraulic rescue equipment had to be used to free the other two occupants, Vermaak said.

"While paramedics and rescuers were struggling to gain access, one of the occupants succumbed to his injuries."

A fourth person was freed and airlifted to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for further treatment. The two women were taken to a nearby hospital, Vermaak said.

The driver of the second car sustained minor injuries.

The cause of the accident was unclear.
