Bethlehem - A Free State Spaza shop owner accosted by armed robbers has been shot dead in front of his wife and three-year-old child, police said on Saturday.

Constable Christopher Mophiring said Ephraim Mokoena, 38, was in his shop at Ha-Sethunya in Qwa Qwa with his wife and child on Friday when three men entered and demanded cash.

The robbers searched the shop but found no money so they smashed the furniture and shot Mokoena in the back. He died at the scene. Mokoena's wife and child were unharmed.

No arrests have been made but police have opened a murder and robbery docket and investigations are continuing, Mophiring said.
