Durban - Moments after hearing that he would not be facing charges of attempted murder, a 43-year old man was gunned down in the parking lot of the Umlazi Magistrate’s Court in Durban on Monday.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said the 43-year-old man was accosted by three unknown men after he left court, who then shot him dead before fleeing the scene.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said Sipho Ndlovu was one of three accused who were facing charges of attempted murder. She said the matter had been struck off the roll by the magistrate.

Zwane said the matter that the man had been accused of was related to an incident that occurred last year in the Glebelands hostels in Umlazi.

“The victim sustained seven gunshot wounds to the body and died instantly. The suspects fled the scene on foot. The motive for killing is still unknown and no arrest has been made at this stage.”

A case of murder has been opened at the Umlazi police station.

The Glebelands hostels have in the past year seen numerous attacks, assaults, firebombing and shootings.

The Mail & Guardian newspaper reported in November last year that at that stage 15 people had been killed in the preceding seven months.

The hostels are home to an estimated 20 000 people.
