Johannesburg - A man was killed and three other people injured in a two-vehicle accident on the R21 in Kempton Park, Johannesburg on Friday night, paramedics said.

"Upon their arrival at the scene paramedics found the motor vehicle came to a standstill against the barrier, while the light utility vehicle overturned and came to a standstill on the other side of the barrier," Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said.

"The male driver of the light utility vehicle was found to be in a critical condition, but the man’s condition deteriorated at the scene due to the extensive injuries sustained during the rollover crash."

The man died on the scene, she said.

A woman, who was trapped in the car, was extricated using the jaws-of-life and taken to hospital.

The accident happened around 21:00.

Traffic had been severely affected and some lanes on the R21 towards Johannesburg remained closed.
