Port Elizabeth - A farm worker in Kirkwood was attacked and killed by a lion he was feeding, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Superintendent Priscilla Naidu said Nokie du Toit, 37, was with his employer and three colleagues in the lions' den when one of the male lions managed to get through the gates and attack the workers at around 11:00 on Monday.

"Immediately when they saw the lion they ran for the bakkie. The lion managed to knock Du Toit off the bakkie and it started biting him. The men threw some meat at the lion and it let go of Du Toit," said Naidu.

No one else was injured.

Du Toit was taken to hospital where he died of bite wounds to his arms and legs.

The lion was later shot dead by the owner.

An inquest docket was opened.
