Johannesburg - A man was stabbed to death with a broken beer bottle in an argument in Johannesburg on Monday morning, police said.

Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said an 18-year-old man was arrested after the attack at the corner of Kruis and Pritchard streets around 02:00.

"It is alleged that a suspect stabbed a 29-year-old male with a beer bottle," he said.

The 18-year-old man was coming from a tavern with his girlfriend when he allegedly started assaulting her.

About five men came to rescue the woman, and her boyfriend stabbed one of them, a 29-year-old, in the upper body with a broken beer bottle.

Paramedics were called but the man was declared dead on the scene.

The man will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.
