Johannesburg - A man was shot and killed when he tried to rob two police officers of their service pistols, Ekurhuleni metro police (EMPD) said on Monday.

Two EMPD public order policing unit officers stopped a Corsa bakkie on the N12 westbound near the Rondebult turn-off on Sunday, spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago said.

When they approached the vehicle, the driver tried to offer them a R100 bribe because he said he did not have a valid driver's license.

When the officers tried to arrest him he ran off into the nearby bushes.

A passenger then got out of the car and held up the two officers, demanding they hand over their firearms.

"One quick-thinking officer who was nearer the assailant grabbed him and managed to reach for his pistol to defuse the danger," Kgasago said.

The officer shot the man in the chest and he died on the scene.

It was found that the Corsa bakkie had been hijacked last month in Jeppe, Johannesburg, and suspected stolen property was found in the vehicle, he said.

Kgasago said the matter would be investigated.
