Man kills friend's hijacker

2011-05-09 10:13

Johannesburg - A man has shot and killed his friend’s suspected hijacker after he received an SMS with the details of the hijacking and happened to see his friend's hijacked car near a restaurant.

Police spokesperson Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said a middle-aged man was hijacked and thrown out of his car in Linksfield in northern Johannesburg at about 18:30 on Saturday.

The hijacker drove off in the man's blue Mercedes-Benz and disabled the tracking system in the Kew area.

The hijacker then drove in the direction of the Nando’s restaurant in Corlett Road near Melrose Arch. The hijack victim meanwhile sent out an SMS to friends saying he had been hijacked.

One of his friends who received the SMS, an ex-security guard, happened to be near the Nando’s and saw his friend’s car.

He stopped at the restaurant and approached the driver of the car before shooting him in the chest. The suspected hijacker had a weapon with him.

“He (the friend) was not arrested because he prevented a crime. An inquest docket has been created to investigate the circumstances around his death,” Dlamini said.

The car was returned to its owner.

According to Gilly Levy, head of operations at CAP Security, a second vehicle was involved in the incident. CAP was informed of the hijacking.

The hijack victim, who was too traumatised to talk to reporters, had been thrown in the back of another vehicle and this car and his own vehicle had driven around for about an hour before the hijackers dropped him off unhurt, Levy said.

The other two suspects are still at large.

      Well done security guard.

      saabnut - 2011-05-09 11:40

didn't Kulubuse Zuma hijack ICT? (a mining company) Just asking...

      Bloodbane - 2011-05-09 11:41

@Eduard_Khil yes and your point is? we need more people like this, and for the record these crimnals in SA should be shot and there should be no trial. 90% of them get out on bail and commit more crimes. shoot and shoot to kill

      Krush - 2011-05-09 12:15

@Eduard. Does this look like a 1st world country to you?

      Frankie - 2011-05-09 12:18

@eduard_khil - your humanitarian side gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling - NOT! Is you mama proud of you?

      hindu_k - 2011-05-09 12:58

Woww nice one!! Oh yes, @edward- go back to sleep!

      Russel - 2011-05-09 13:16

@Eduard_Khil - couldn't agree with you more, and the responses to your post just prove the point so well. Revelling in the death of a fellow human being, no matter their actions, speaks volumes about the kind of people who post here. I dont condone violence in any form. And its ironic that the ones screaming for blood dont see how they contribute towards a more violent SA.

      Russel - 2011-05-09 13:57

@Nunya - my decency, self respect and godliness does not depend on the actions of others. If violence in SA has shaped you into a violent, vindictive, angry, rude person (your post seems to suggest this), are you any better than the other perpetrators of violence? Or do you just enjoy the platform to anonymously vomit your anger into cyber space?

      Downunder - 2011-05-09 14:52

Eduard_Khil, SA is not a 1st world country with a first world police force and 1st world standards of security. The citizens must protect themselves, friends, family and community if the police cannot do it! This man (ex security guard) needs a medal!

      Rob - 2011-05-09 16:03

OMG guys we`ve got a live one here. ( ie @Russell)

      Rob - 2011-05-09 16:27

@ Russel- quote "Or do you just enjoy the platform to anonymously vomit your anger into cyber space?" Is that not rude? So you can be rude but no one else is allowed to. Is this part of your doctrine of decency, self respect and godliness? Further- "If violence in SA has shaped you into a violent, vindictive, angry, rude person." Do you understand what is meant by hypocricy?- Go practice your version of decency self and respect elsewhere. Your idea of godliness is about as useful here as a bicycle is to a fish.

      Warren - 2011-05-09 16:29

Scumbags: 16554... Good Guys: 1 And Eduard & Russell find the time to have a hissy fit! FFS man, it's one less criminal taking the lives of LAW ABBIDING TAX PAYERS, because they are too lazy to do an HONEST DAYS WORK!!!

      Nunya - 2011-05-09 16:47

O brother Russel (holy one)...You can not even begin to understand the magnitude of the violence in me...especially if one of those useless, parasites tries to hurt me or my family....that thing and his kind does not deserve the life that the dear Lord gave him!!!

      zak - 2011-05-09 17:38

Well done !!!!!! We need more people like this in SA!

      enuffisenuff - 2011-05-09 21:15

Eduard and russel, since when is self defense defined as being a vigalante?? He didnt just get out of his car and start shooting, he clearly and verbally shouted an instruction to the armed suspect, any law abiding citizen who carrys a firearm for self defense would be forced to defend themselves when there life is placed in imminent danger...

      Donald Maasdorp - 2011-05-10 01:23

russel you are an asswhipe, I am in a wheelchair and the thugs were found not guilty with enough evidence. so I wish my cousins were that brave. They better hope I don't see them. and your friend the other dig head wait till you get held up tied up and your wife shot or raped than tell me which cheek you will turn.

      Guy Snelling - 2011-05-10 08:00

@Eduard Were you there? Do you think that the hijacker was shot in cold blood? The report says that he had a weapon so it's more likely that the victims friend simply defended himself. There's two sides to every story and you can never know all the facts, so don't voice your opinions based on a snippet in a news article.

      Umfubi - 2011-05-10 09:10

Have to agree with Eduard Khil. Vehicle hijacking is not a capital crime, and we don't have the death penalty. The friend should have called the police. If a policeman had simply shot the guy, all hell would have broken loose. I know there is a kind of visceral satisfaction in stories like this... but just imagine for one moment that the shot guy wasn't the hijacker? There are way too many cowboys out there, and ultimately they aren't really doing us too many favours.

      Umfubi - 2011-05-10 09:14

@ Nunya: Oh sacred brother Nunya, you noble killer of anyone who looks at anyone else skeef: just imagine if this alleged hijacker was your daddy or your brother or your son - would you still be spewing this garbage then? Especially if you have no idea if he's actually the guilty one? @Russel: well spoken. Unfortunately the calibre of people on this forum... well, let's not even go there. It's totally depressing.

      Russel - 2011-05-10 09:45

@Umfubi - thank you! heart-warming to see your response. Makes me believe in humanity when all around me I see so many reasons not to. @Nunya - I never defined myself as holy, but thank you for acknowledging the part of me that tries hard to be :) @Rob - my shortcomings do not give anyone else permission to be less than they can be, and theirs do not give me permission either. Hypocrisy is seeing my rudeness but not the person's to whom I was responding. So if you are right, we were both rude, not so? Or is certain rudeness acceptable because of righteous indignation? I apologise to you and Nunya if my post was offensive.

      CITIZEN - 2011-05-10 11:05

EDUARD YOU PROBALY NEVER BEEN A VICTIM OF CRIME THE ONLY GOOD CRIMINAL IN THIS COUNTRY IS A DEAD CRIMINAL ENOUGH IS ENOUGH WELL DONE TO THE MAN WHO KILLED THE GOOD CRIMINAL

      boychina - 2011-05-10 14:21

@Umfumbi- so you telling people to just imagine that the person is your daddy or brother... flip it around then... just imagine the man in the boot was your brother or daddy, just imagine what could happen to him. Can you honestly say you know what the intentions of the hijacker was? Just imagine the hijacker pulling your loved one out and killing them. Wouldn't you do whatever you could to keep a loved one of yours safe? Killing is nothing to glorify, but if he felt that his life and his friends life was in jeopardy, then he acted accordingly. Always two sides.. oh and ya, he was hijacking someone in the first place....

      Umfubi - 2011-05-10 14:40

@boychina: But the victim wasn't in danger at that point - he wasn't even on the scene. This wasn't some sort of heroic rescue mission - it was retribution and execution, without trial. You cannot go around killing people in order to stop them running away, or even to get the car back. The guy should have been apprehended and made to answer in court. I am perfectly well aware that the court system/bail etc leave a lot to be desired, but dammit we can't all just take the law into our own hands. It is disturbing how few of the commenters on this story seem to get that point.

      LathD - 2011-05-10 15:39

Eduard-Khill - SA is not a 1st world country and in all likelihood wouldn't pass the 3rd world grading test --- when in Rome ......

      enuffisenuff - 2011-05-10 17:00

Umfubi, you are truly and ignorant tree hugger, firstly it was some rescue mission or retibution as you state, firstly, no one knew at that stage that the victim had already been dropped off, so yes in hindsight, the victim was safe but the friend most certainly was not safe..... the suspect had the means and the intention to try kill the friend.....

      RiRo1 - 2011-05-11 10:07

@Eduard Actually they are okay with this kind of stuff, because they do it too. Osama is an example. The police and justice in this country are pathetic...

Something does not sound right, we will read about this soon, BUT, I am glad he shot the bugger!

      comeonnow - 2011-05-09 10:38

Hi All, I live in the GAP/CAP area. These CAP guys are amazing!! If u drive around the area for 2minutes u will see at least 5 of their response vehicle each of which has 2 heavily armed, trained guards. As soon as a vehicle is hi-jacked, the victim notifies the control room and an sms is sent out too all subscribers/supporters registered on their database to be on the look-out for the stolen vehicle...this is obviously how the 'friend' knew about the hi-jacked car.

      cosmic_99 - 2011-05-09 11:43

comeonnow, i am not so sure how amazing they are. they smashed into me last year whilst trying to get to a hijacking. i was minding my own business at a stop street. poor driving skills.....

      enuffisenuff - 2011-05-09 21:09

cosmic, you prb froze in the middle of the intersection like most idiots do when emergency cars are trying to get through

  • Nebkad - 2011-05-09 10:33

Something doesn't sound right!!! The crime, that high jacking, was committed. So the friend did NOT prevent THE crime. Did the "friend" shoot while trying to arrest the "criminal", or did he shoot self-defense? As always, one has come to expect this kind of reporting from NEWS24; hopefully facts will come out?

      Gaanake - 2011-05-09 11:10

Is Nebkad's name spelt correctly? Shouldn't it be Nedkak?

      enuffisenuff - 2011-05-09 22:53

SOrry me again Danielle, even though most of your facts are correct, please be 100% certain before making certain points. There was no job description, this would imply he is employed by CAP etc he was a concerned citizen who happened to be friends with the victim.

      mjvandersandt - 2011-05-10 10:07

Preventing him from driving any further is preventing a crime, cause he would be stealing the owner's fuel from his tank and drive with a vehicle of which he did not conrtibute to the road tax for. Theft is also punishable, in this case by death. If the killers of ET can justify killing for debt then killing for theft is probably better justified.

  • davethechurch - 2011-05-09 10:36

@ruezy - you are right he shouldnt have to mention that, it should be self evident.

      ruezy - 2011-05-09 15:55

actually bloodbane.....i'm saying is it necessary to mention their race?, i'm not in support of your comment.

      Warren - 2011-05-09 20:47

My curiosity has got the better of me so I have to ask this question, & I'm asking it with respect. Has anybody been hijacked by a white guy?

      Bloodbane - 2011-05-10 07:59

@ruezy - if it was white it would be out of the norm, so then it would be wise to mention race. sorry but simple statistics state that 99% of hijackers in SA are black therefore there should be no need to mention race unless it was against the normal. thats not racist thats facts.

  • crocodile - 2011-05-09 10:36

@crocodile In central JHB and in our communities when we catch them everybody jumps in including the women and we give them a bloody good hinding, tie them and wait for the police. When they stand trial we tesify and nail them even further.

      RoyoF - 2011-05-10 09:11

Yes Jay , thats about the easiest way to kill someone , get them to drive your car ,fake being thrown out of a car and hijacked, call the cops, tell your friend to go to Nandos, have security waiting there to shoot them and get the security company in on it too.Smoke anotha one frend. The more of these bastards we can all shoot dead the better .ANd of course there are only some people who go straight for chicken after achievement. Its a good Nandos there man .

      Heinrich - 2011-05-10 12:24

Hay, jay.I got stabbed in the neck once, another time I was held hostage while we got robbed, another time I got chased with a knife throught the field. What do you make of that? Maybe I tried to push the knife (he brought)into my neck, while he jumped on top of me and tried to pull it away from my neck Or maybe my family thought it to be a nice practical joke to hire 4 guys to hold my hostage while telling my brothers and friend to give everything, or I will 'get it' When I was chanced with a knife, maybe the school wanted to see how fast I could run, because face it,I never liked attending practise at school sports. Wake up in life. Ignorance is bliss, but it might get you killed... I went to 28 different countries in the last 2 years for my work. Not in even one of the other countries did we have to worry about something like this. I use to visit my friend on off days till about 3o'clock in the morning and still didn't worry about walking home, even though I use to walk past 2 construction sites. I went to countries where people have nothing. They sleep on river beds, next to dustbins in the streets, no food, disease infected family members, but nobody robbed or killed anybody else to get ahead in life. Think again before you stand up for any criminal. And the outlanders:please stop commenting on these stories like you know what is going on.I also don't like to see anybody else die because of stuff like this, but you realy don't have a clue what is going on in South Africa...

The ANC has used the race card to death to try to cover up their massive incompetence. I have to wonder if you would write the same comment if it was you who was the victim? Vote DA.
