Pietermaritzburg - A man is feared missing after the vehicle in which he was travelling was swept off a low-level bridge in Pietermaritzburg, ER24 paramedics said on Friday.

Three passengers with the man made their way out of the vehicle on Thursday evening when they realised it was sliding into the water.

They told medics the man had been trapped in the car and swept away with it, said spokesperson Vanessa Jackson.

Police are investigating.

I'm astonished at some people's stupidity. If you can see that a river is in flood, water rushing over the top of the bridge, why do you still attempt to cross it?

Although the article indicates the incident took place in the evening,it may have been dark.In such circumstances,it will be difficult to realize the water is over the bridge. If this is the Umsindusi low bridge near the park, it's time for the Council to build a decent bridge. Too many washaways have occcured on that bridge.

    Which bridge was this exactly?

Tragic - but you don't yake a chance over a low level bridge that is flooded.

That has to be the infamous back road from Royston Road into Old Bishopstowe Road, its like couple times a year we hear about people / vehicles being swept away. Its simple, you reach the low bridge that has water gushing over it, rather reverse up the hill and turn around than throw your life away.

"The vehicle in which he was travelling was swept..." This is fascinating!! So, it wasn't the driver of the vehicle that was in charge of the vehicle that deliberately and foolishly aimed his car for a bridge-like object entirely obscured by deep, fast-flowing water? It was the poor man, grabbed by the vehicle against his will (with three others it seems) and then the naughty vehicle then drove itself into the raging torrent!! Hilarious. Is this how journalists are taught in the 'I'm a victim SA".
