Cape Town - The murder of a commuter on an early morning Cape Town train is under investigation, police confirmed on Wednesday.

A train conductor is understood to have found the body of a man in a carriage at 05:00 on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana confirmed the murder.

“An unidentified male, with a gunshot wound, was discovered lying inside a Metrorail carriage,” she said.

According to a police source, the train left Kraaifontein station at 04:00 and pulled in at Cape Town station on platform eight.

“When detectives wanted to view the CCTV footage, it was discovered that the camera on this platform was out of order,” the officer said.

“However, footage from platform nine shows commuters disembarking and looking into the carriage, presumably at the body. But no witnesses have reported it yet.”

The man sustained a bullet wound to the chest.

“There was blood in two carriages, which indicates there was a scuffle from one coach to the next. He still had cash on him and a cellphone.”

The man is black and in his 30s. No arrests have yet been made, Rwexana said.

Call detective Warrant Officer Shaun Bardien on 073 220 0653 with information.
