Cape Town - A man was arrested for possession of 37 bottles of Broncleer which was “definitely not for a cough”, Cape Town Metro Police deputy chief Yolande Faro said on Monday.

The 31-year-old suspect was one of 127 suspects arrested during weekend operations held across the city.

Faro said the medicine, a favourite among codeine addicts, was found during a search at an illegal liquor outlet during a joint operation with Milnerton police.

“The cough syrup was found packed in a supplier’s box,” she said.

“It is highly addictive as it is drunk to give the user a high. In some cases, people drink up to 10 bottles a day.”

The suspect was charged for being in contravention of the Medicines Control Act and for possession of stolen goods.

Eleven bottles of beer were also confiscated from the property, she confirmed.

In addition, 34 people were arrested on drug related charges and 81 for drunk driving by the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement agencies.
