Johannesburg - A 45-year-old man has been held for questioning in connection with the murder of three people in Bizana, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

Captain Mlungisi Matidane said a 3-year-old boy, a 15-year-old and a 37-year-old woman were murdered, then set alight, in the early hours of Tuesday.

Police said they found their remains in a two-roomed flat and that evidence believed to be linked to the murder was found in areas far from the crime scene.

"We found a four-pound hammer with bloodstains, 400km away from the area and two blankets with bloodstains 300km away from the scene, in a river," said Matidane.

He said the investigation continued and the motive of the crime was unknown.
