Durban - A man spent almost 24 hours clinging to a craggy outcrop in a rural region of KZN after plunging off the edge of a waterfall.

The man, who was badly injured, plunged approximately 30m down a cliff onto a rocky ledge at Nsuze, about 30km inland from Stanger.

On Tuesday, paramedics and police rescue technicians mounted a dangerous rescue, using an elaborate rope system to hoist him to safety before he was rushed to a local hospital in a critical condition.

It is understood that the man had fallen off the waterfall while winding his way along a nearby path.

It was on Tuesday morning, almost a full day and night later, that a passer-by heard his desperate cries for help.

IPSS Medical Rescue spokesperson Dylan Meyrick said the man had been clinging to the cliff face through the night.

“The 48-year-old man had been hanging on the side of the cliff and IPSS rescue technicians with Police Search and Rescue officers then set about his rescue,” he said.

“A rope system was set up using a Land Cruiser as an anchor and two vehicles mounted winches to lower the medics down to the man.

"Once he was stabilised and his injuries assessed, he was placed in a Stokes rescue basket and hauled to the top of the falls,” he added.

“He sustained various injuries... and appeared to be in advanced stages of hypothermia.”
