Cape Town - A man was found hanging on a rope between two fishing trawlers in Hout Bay harbour on Sunday afternoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Around 14:30, NSRI Hout Bay was activated while conducting routine skipper/coxswain training with other NSRI duty coxswains, spokesperson Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

This followed reports from the Hout Bay Neighbourhood Watch control room that a person had fallen into Hout Bay harbour, next to the Mariners Wharf Restaurant.

An NSRI sea craft was diverted from training exercises and on arrival, a 48-year-old local man was found hanging onto rope between two fishing trawlers in the harbour.

"NSRI Mossel Bay rescue swimmer Jeremiah Meintjes was deployed into the water... and the man, suffering hypothermia and near drowning symptoms, was rescued onto the NSRI rescue craft," Lambinon said.

NSRI CEO Dr Cleeve Robertson, on board the sea rescue craft at the time, treated the man, who was brought to shore and taken to hospital in a stable condition by provincial emergency medical services. He was under observation for secondary drowning.

"It appears that a scuffle had broken out between two men on the harbour pier and during the scuffle, one man fell into the water. Local security are investigating an incident between the two men," Lambinon said.
