Man saves dog from drowning, then wife

2013-08-05 09:31

East London - A couple and their dog are recovering after swimming to safety when their yacht ran aground near the East London coast on Sunday.

Graham Anley, his wife Cheryl and their 9-year-old Jack Russell Rosie were sailing from East London to Madagascar for a holiday when their yacht hit a reef in the early hours of Sunday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute’s Geoff McGregor said.

Anley and the dog swam to shore before returning for his wife whose safety line had snagged on the steering gear.

The Jack Russell was wearing a specially tailored dog life-jacket which has its own emergency strobe light attached to it.

Once safely ashore, the couple alerted the NSRI.

When a rescue helicopter was dispatched, the couple and Rosie were found safely ashore and uninjured. However, the couple’s yacht, called The Boundless, was severely damaged.

Anley is himself a volunteer for the NSRI. He said that after 22 years as a volunteer it is "humbling to have the shoe on the other foot and need to be rescued".

Haha yeah...and first the dog then the wife? I know some husbands who would do it in that order as well :) a Bells to you none the less!

It is probably because wife has sense and would stay on board of the vessel which ran aground whereas the dog would panic and maybe swim out to sea!

or, perhaps the wife was the captain?

I don't see anything in the story about him saving the dog. I read the dog swam to shore. Totally misleading headline.

      Disgraceful sub-editing

The dog had a life jacket on. Did not need to be saved from drowning.

  • Brenda Roodbol - 2013-08-05 09:55

Wow, and the dog had a life-jacket... this is what I call wise animal parents! And Johan, he obviously did not swim 450km! He swam to the nearest coast shore. The yacht ran aground 450 km from the East London coast.

      Silvia Van Eck - 2013-08-05 10:10

Brenda, They must have changed the article cause there is no reference to 450km in it.

  • Gawie Keyser - 2013-08-05 09:56

    450KM's He is a fast swimmer !

  • Charles_McDonwald - 2013-08-05 10:04

You must be some kind of stupid to think he swam ~1500Km in a day. Really.

  • Joe Black - 2013-08-05 10:35

Haha! I'm pretty sure they agreed to this course of action together at the time, but the way the article is titled is extremely funny.

What a lovely story. I am so glad all three are safe and sound.

  • Pixie Coertzen - 2013-08-05 11:02

Thank you for saving your Jack Russell. You are a special person. I have 14 doggies of my own (two Jack Russells). Have a super day and thank you for being such a fantastic animal lover. Hope you all three are fine. Kind regards. Pixie.

Well, now the wife knows exactly where she fits into this relationship.

  • Roelien Van Wyk - 2013-08-05 12:32

This is where the 450 comes in: "The alarm was raised with the NSRI in East London at 6.15am on Sunday , following reports that the 36-foot yacht Boundless had run aground at Cebe, around 450km by road from East London, on the Transkei coast.

  • Simone Roos - 2013-08-05 12:45
