Johannesburg - A Free State taxi association member killed one person and shot four others before turning the gun on himself on the way back from a funeral on Saturday, Free State police said.

"At about 13:51, Harrismith police received a call of a shooting incident on R74 Bergville road at a stop-and-go construction road," spokesperson Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said.

When they arrived, they found six people had been shot.

It was learned that the six, plus five others travelling back from the funeral, belonged to the Katlehong People's Taxi Association and were returning home from burying a colleague in Bergville.

"It is alleged that as they arrived at a stop-and-go, five passengers went out of the taxi to urinate," Mophiring said.

"Shortly after, the sixth passenger also went outside and started accusing his team of murdering the driver they just buried, who was his friend. He allegedly went back to the five passengers who remained in the taxi and started shooting randomly thereafter turned the gun to himself."

The man died instantly.

The driver of the vehicle and three passengers were referred to Thebe District hospital in Harrismth with gunshot wounds.

"The fifth passenger also died at the scene. The other five passengers who were outside were unharmed," he said.

The gun used was licensed to the man who killed himself.

A case of murder, four attempted murder cases and an inquest docket were opened for further investigation.
