Johannesburg - A man was wounded by Johannesburg metro police early Saturday evening after the man and two others shot at police in Yeoville, metro police said.

"JMPD officers were stopping cars and doing random checks at the corner of Raleigh Street and Bedford Street in Yeoville at about 6pm when a grey Toyota... stopped on the side of the road with three male occupants," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

"As officers approached them, all three got out with firearms and shot at officers, who returned fire, hitting one male suspect who was arrested and taken to hospital."

Three bystanders were wounded during the shoot-out and were also taken to hospital, he said.

No metro police officers were injured and police recovered one illegal firearm.

Police were searching for the two other men.
