Man shot dead at Builders Warehouse

2012-02-22 09:53

Johannesburg - A Builders Warehouse shopper was shot dead on Wednesday when four men attempted to rob the store, Johannesburg police said.

The shooting occurred at the Rivonia branch at around 06:40, said Captain Kym Cloete.

"Employees and security at Builders Warehouse were busy opening the business for the day and they were then approached by one suspect dressed in security uniform," said Cloete.

They let him in because he was in uniform, but he then held them at gunpoint and was joined by three other men.

"The suspects demanded cash, but when the employee was unable to unlock the safe he was assaulted," said Cloete.

At that point, two male customers arrived at the store. One of them was shot by the robbers, who then ran away.

The employee who was assaulted was not seriously injured, said Cloete.

Massmart confirmed the incident, saying the duty manager was unable to open to safe due to strict security measures in place at the store.

"The armed men then left the store and in what appears to be an attempt to secure a getaway vehicle, they confronted a member of the public who was parked in the parking lot. A scuffle ensued and it is with the deepest and utmost regret that we have to confirm the owner of the vehicle was shot and fatally wounded."

Massmart said trauma counsellors are on scene.

The store, which is now a crime scene, is currently not open for trade, it added.

well...this should be an easy one for the cops..CCTV..the first idiot walked in as a security guard right?

      This is sad news.

      Janice - 2012-02-22 10:29

Why do these things have to kill??? And they got away with nothing!!!

      Warren - 2012-02-22 11:08

Hard to believe in this day & age that criminals don't yet know what a drop safe is, maybe I'm just giving them too much credit. Sad that someone's life has been taken away because of pure stupidity! Also, it wouldn't surprise me if an employee is arrested soon in connection with this crime.

And people are amazed because people are seeking asylum in america. Well maybe thats because we have hate fuelled people roaming the streets killing for no reason and thay are encouraged by the mindless banter of the likes of Julius Malema to fear and hate and blame white people for everything. Not to mention the incompetence of out police force and the fact that prices for everything are rising almost daily, farm murders, violent protesting, strikes. these are pretty good reasons to seek asylum i think

  • KayMoruane - 2012-02-22 10:03

Just hope the manager have installed CCTV, put their faces at every corner of the street...let's get this culprits ourselves and teach them a very serious lesson because police will take forever to catch them

      edward.d.beesley - 2012-02-22 13:31

Yeah, and the first thing the Defence will do is try and get the CCTV evidence thrown out because of the accused's rights being violated by being filmed without his knowledge, or something equally pathetic, and the Court, being as pathetic, will concur ...

  • procold2 - 2012-02-22 10:07

condolences to the family, crime is way past getting out of hand the gov needs to step in and bring back the death sentence for all violent crime, there is just no deterrent and these criminals are not scared of the law or to be killed themselves.

That must have been quite scary. Glad you and yours are safe.

      Ari - 2012-02-22 11:05

Hopefully after the police have questioned the suspect and he has identified his accomplices, he will try to escape and have to be shot as he flees . . .

  • Nigel - 2012-02-22 10:09

they don't hesitate to kill, these thugs should be hanged in public, its time to implement extraordinary measures for these extraordinary criminals, if the justice system doesn't put them behind bars, it will be left to us to put an end to these mindless murdering thugs.

  • Dee - 2012-02-22 10:18

Some comments here are just nuts, like crime is starting today. How about killing sprees in the apartheid days to innocent black citizens and rape to our mothers. We all need to live in a crime free country, untill we all come together & fight this "monster" and refrain from pointing fingers. Change will only be a dream.

      MSGRule - 2012-02-22 10:44

Comment one was deleted!!! IDIOT Statement form an IDIOT!!

      Goldie - 2012-02-22 10:54

Dee, I am really unclear how apartheid made it into this tragedy. Are you saying it is ok to rape and kill and destroy anyone now, since there were a few who perpetrated these crimes - on nowhere near the current scale - 20 years ago?

      Lana-May - 2012-02-22 11:24

Oh another "lets blame everything on apartheid" moron.... really.. just get over it already....

      atleeyarrow - 2012-02-22 11:38

Maybe Dee it would be a good lesson to look at who is committing the crimes, placing "innocent" in the same context with "black" is surely paradoxical. In example, here in the USA blacks make up only 12% of the population; yet, they make up 55% of the CONVICTED criminals in a more than fair and equal justice system and taxpayers are left holding the bill for their offspring.

      Marion - 2012-02-22 11:57

@aleeyarrow... if you google and go to sites where experts are quoted and look at the analysed reasons for those statistics you quote you will find out the real reason there are more blacks than whites in prison 'here in the USA'. If you are 'here in the USA' why are you trying to be provocative with your pre-1994 avatar?

      Frank - 2012-02-22 12:33

apartheid was obviously wrong,i`m not sure what killing sprees you refer that comes to mind is the sharpville massacre which has even been an allocated a public holiday.69 were killed that day through what was ultimately self defense as the police were highly outnumbered ,although they shouldn`t have been there in the first place, none the less, it wasn`t outright how many woman and children have been raped and murdered for no reason at all in `rainbow nation`?there should be a public holiday for the `massacred farmers` too...

      Nick - 2012-02-22 12:34

      Jacqui - 2012-02-22 12:50

Someone will always fetch apartheid off the self, dust it down and write something stupid about it.

      Mikkel - 2012-02-22 12:57

Oh God here we go again . . . . You said that we should refrain from pointing fingers BUT you're pointing your tentacle towards the "apartheid".

  • Brad.Kopping - 2012-02-22 10:21

      Ziggie - 2012-02-22 11:02

Happened to me also a few times, idiots. Let the people be heard!!!

      atleeyarrow - 2012-02-22 11:45

Censorship at a news website is unheard of here in the USA. There must be some law in SA and the news station cannot report actual free speech, association, or quality news counter to the state's guidelines. Here in America we have laws and rights AGAINST dictatorships.

      Marion - 2012-02-22 11:58

'here in the US' again... why don't you put the US flag as your avatar? Reading your comment it's obvious you believe it is much better than SA.

      Jacqui - 2012-02-22 12:54

Atleeyarrow, Here in the USA we etc, etc. How long have you been there?. Go stand on the corner with a placard all about what a great guy Osama Ben Laden was and see how far your free speech will get you. Don't be daft.

  • JJ - 2012-02-22 10:25

It pains me to say it when you've worked so hard for your vehicle and possessions, but sometimes you should just give them up. It's not worth your life to scuffle where a weapon is involved. Condolences to your family and RIP. This crime has to stop.

  • Tshidi - 2012-02-22 10:45

This robbery at the retail stores is now out of hand. Police needs to catch this guys. But really how can you rob the shop so early in the morning and demanding safe keys, Nxa.

      MSGRule - 2012-02-22 10:55

Maybe all store owners and staff should have weapons behind the counter and get training. And start killing robbers. Becuase the robbers just shoot anyone without thought.

      atleeyarrow - 2012-02-22 11:50

Here in America we have a saying, "A well armed society is a polite society." Everyone should carry at least one hand gun and training should start in school with a re-certification each year until the legal adult age. If everyone know that everyone else is carrying death on their hip side pocket crime will fall faster than a rock in water to the bottom. Then the business of civil society under rule of law will thrive and prosper.

      Lana-May - 2012-02-22 12:10

@atleeyarrow...... "Here in America" America is not South Africa.... If every one here was allowed to have a weapon it will be war... Thats just a silly comment....

      Lana-May - 2012-02-22 13:43

Im saying there are a lot of looneys out there... go read every story on news 24 then you will see that....

  • ludlowdj - 2012-02-22 11:08

It would seem the ANC's policy of disarming its citizens is working out fine for them, even though the ANC cannot account for over 40 tons of weapons and ammunition it imported to the country during their so called "struggle" or the fact that over 70% of all weapons stolen annually are stolen from the government themselves.

How is a country supposed to build itself up when so many of it's people are spending their energies in grieving? Yet another family devastated by criminals and a Government that appears powerless or relucatnt to do anything about it. A government is like a parent - it should be doing everything in it's power to protect it's people from pain and suffering. Mr Zuma, you are neglecting the very people that look to you to keep them safe....... shame on you. Deepest condolences to the family of this man - the latest victim of sensleless crime.

  • Dave - 2012-02-22 11:50

same sh1t different day!! someone just popped into builders warehouse to buy something and now they are gone !! is it just me or is something seriously wrong here? many people I know are getting very "ghat vol" of these people, some have lost confidence in the police and now small pockets of "resistance" are starting. To the Govment you guys better deal with this becuase if you think you have problems now, when more people have enough they will start taking the law into their own hands, criminals beware soft targets are getting less and less and some even have a sting in their tail!

  • Gail - 2012-02-22 12:19

This is truely apalling. People should be searched when entering the premises. Stricter security measures should be applied. Poor man that was shot. My heart goes out his family.

  • Vijay - 2012-02-22 13:10

It's amazing how we try to analyse this scourge of crime, attributing all sorts of reason for it. When fundementally, it stems from being purely and intrinsically evil. I grew up at the receiving end of apartheid, with an absent father. My ancestors were even more deeply affected by apartheid. Yet strangely, I do not have the urge to go out and kill and take what is not mine. It is not about race, or socioeconomics or environment. There are countless extremely poor societies outside of South AFrica, who have been through different challenges, and have more justifiable reasons to commit crime. But we lead. Why? It is about core values. The more people try to justify crime, the more rampant it becomes. As this is the message you sending to your kids: Its ok to go out and kill to get what you want, because your grandfather was killed by an insecure greedy white man. So now it is your turn to be greedy. Let us address the evil that is growing amidst us, not by joining it,but fighting against it.

  • neville.kehl - 2012-02-22 13:29

WoW...they getting so brave. Unlike the police who are just plain useless.Even with cctv...nothing will happen...just nothing..crime does pay in the RSA..

  • Anakin - 2012-02-22 14:36

So sad this had to happen to yet another innocent person. My condolences to his family and friends. I HATE these thugs that makes everyone else's lives a living hell. Just when one is in a good mood this type of thing happens, again. WHEN can I give in my firearm, WHEN will it be safe to do so? Not anytime soon I'm afraid. I'm also not sure if those THUGS would not have shot the owner afterwards for his vehicle if he didn't put up a fight. And carrying a firearm all the time is not necessarily the answer, if you are right-handed it will be next to impossible to pull it out and shoot back at them in time to defend yourself, especially if you are wearing your seatbelt. WHAT must one then DO to stop this violent crime? We are all so FED-UP.
