Johannesburg - A man was shot and injured in an altercation with Gauteng traffic police on the Olifantsfontein off-ramp onto the R21 near Midrand on Tuesday, police said.

"It is alleged that this morning... members of the Gauteng traffic police were on a stop and search operation and they stopped a suspicious minibus taxi," police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale said.

"One officer approached the driver, an altercation ensured and shots went off."

One man was injured, two were arrested on scene, and a fourth was found in a tree in the nearby veld.

The injured man was taken to hospital, where he is under police guard, Mogale said.

"The incident happened just before 10:00. Two R4 rifles were recovered on the scene."

She said police were currently taking statements and collecting exhibits on scene.
