Johannesburg - A man was shot and wounded in Hillcrest on Thursday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

"We can confirm the shooting that took place today at Nqetho area in Hillcrest, but when the police arrived at the scene, the victim was already taken to hospital," said police spokesperson Jay Naicker.

The motive was not known.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said a 27-year-old man was in a critical condition in hospital after he sustained two gunshot wounds.

He said paramedics arrived on scene and found the man lying on the pavement in a pool of blood.

"On assessment, paramedics found that the man had sustained two gunshot wounds, one to the neck and another to his buttocks."

He was transported to RK Kahn Hospital.
