Johannesburg - A man was shot and killed in Benoni, Ekurhuleni, on Monday morning during a robbery, Gauteng police said.

Four men robbed G4 Security guards while they were collecting money from a Spar in Rynfield between 10:00 and 11:00, spokesperson Lieutenant Nomsa Sekele said.

They took an undisclosed amount of money and a firearm from the guards, who were unhurt. Police were called and saw a red VW Polo used as their getaway car.

"When they attended the complaint on the corner of Snake Road they spotted the vehicle... One of the suspects climbed out of vehicle and started shooting at police, while the other three suspects proceeded on the freeway towards Johannesburg."

The man was wounded and died on his way to hospital. Police recovered the car on the Tom Jones Road off-ramp. A man was questioned by police.
