Johannesburg - A man was shot and killed in Bedfordview, east of Johannesburg, on Wednesday night, Gauteng police said.

"The man was travelling in his double cab bakkie then he was seemingly forced or pushed off the road," police spokesperson Mack Mgomezulu told News24 on Thursday.

It appeared the man jumped out of his car and tried running away across Arbroath Street when he was shot dead next to Eastgate Mall.

He was shot four times in the upper body.

The man, 40, was declared dead on the scene. He did not appear to have been robbed.

"His business cards, wallet, cellphones were lying around near him and he had a gun in his hand as well," Mgomezulu said.

A murder docket was opened. The motive was unknown and no witnesses had come forward, Mgomezulu said.
