Johannesburg - A man was shot and wounded in Etwatwa, on the East Rand, while fighting police who were trying to arrest him on Tuesday afternoon, Gauteng police said.

"Police were patrolling and saw a car with three occupants. They stopped the car, searched it and discovered a firearm lying inside the car," police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said.

"The suspects tried to fight the police."

One man was shot in the knee. Two of the men had unlicensed firearms. One of the three managed to flee. Police arrested the other two, aged 27 and 31.

They would appear in the Benoni Magistrate's Court soon for possession of a stolen car and illegal firearms.

Meanwhile, in Edenvale around noon, a police patrol tried to search a Toyota bakkie.

"When those in the bakkie saw the police coming, they fled," said Makhubela.

"The police gave chase and they cornered the bakkie, to find that it was recently stolen, and not yet reported."

The two men in the bakkie, aged 35 and 41, were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and arrested.

They would appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court soon.
